How Many Days Do You Need in Costa Rica? 15 Itinerary Ideas
So, how many days do you need in Costa Rica to really experience the country?
This is a big question for anyone in the planning stages of their trip. Usually, 7 to 10 days is ideal for most people because it’s enough time to get a feel for a 2 or 3 different destinations without rushing.
We’ve found that 10 days is the sweet spot for us because we can usually fit in a visit to some of our favorite places plus add at least one new destination as well.
With 7 days, we usually don’t like scheduling more than 2 destinations into our itinerary because it starts to feel too busy.
So, once you’ve decided how many days you can visit, then what? Well, that’s what we’re here to help with.
In this guide, we’re going to outline our 15 favorite Costa Rica itineraries for varying lengths of stay. This list is meant for first-time visitors who want to experience the most popular destinations in the country.
By the end, you’ll have a good sense of how you’d like to plan your own itinerary.

Ideal Itinerary Length Overview

Before diving in, we want to give you a quick overview of the ideal number of destinations we recommend based on length of stay.
- 3 to 5 days → Best to focus on one region
- 7 days → Ideal for first-time visitors and best when limited to 2 destinations
- 10 days → Good amount of time for those that want a mix of 3 destinations
- 14 days →A more comprehensive trip with multiple regions
- 2 to 3 weeks → Great for visitors who want a slower pace or want to visit more out-of-the-way areas
Itinerary Ideas For 5 Nights or Less in Costa Rica

We realize that it’s not always possible to schedule a full week or more away from real life. Sometimes work and school schedules only allow for a few days. We get it.
If this sounds like you, we want you to know that this is absolutely doable, you just need to be strategic with your planning.
For this length of stay, it’s best to pick one location and fully explore it as opposed to moving around. Trying to fit more than one in can cut into your vacation time significantly.
However, we are including a couple of itinerary ideas for anyone that really has their heart set on visiting a couple of places in a short amount of time.
1. Spend 5 Days in Manuel Antonio
If you want a good combination of rain forest and beach experiences, and you only have a few days, head to Manuel Antonio. You can experience a lot of what Costa Rica has to offer without having to travel too far.
Why We Like Manuel Antonio as a Base:
Manuel Antonio is centrally located along the central Pacific coast. This puts you within close proximity to places like the popular surf town, Jaco, which makes for a great day trip.
However, we especially like that both the rain forest and the ocean are right at your doorstep in Manuel Antonio.
Ideal Trip Length: 5 days/4 nights
Best Things to do in Manuel Antonio:
- Explore Manuel Antonio National Park
- Check out some of the beaches
- Take a canopy tour
- Kayak through Damas Island Mangroves
- Visit Jaco
Who It’s Best For: Travelers with limited vacation time
Where to Fly Into:
When heading to Manuel Antonio, it’s best to fly into San Jose. From there, it’s roughly a 3-hour drive.
Considerations:
To make this work, you’ll need to plan your flights in a way that maximizes your time in Costa Rica.
If your flight arrives into San Jose too late or departs too early, you may need to spend an overnight in San Jose on either end.
If you decide to rent a car, we always recommend to not drive at night in Costa Rica. This is because the mountainous roads are often winding, hilly, and not well lit which can make for dangerous driving conditions.

2. Spend 5 Days in Guanacaste
The Guanacaste region is one of the most popular areas of Costa Rica, mainly because of all the great beaches and towns that line the coast. There are plenty of activities available to appeal to different interests including surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and horseback riding.
Why We Like Guanacaste as a Base:
If you are primarily looking for a beach vacation, you really can’t beat Guanacaste. You can easily visit a different beach every day of your stay without repeating.
Ideal Trip Length: 5 days/4 nights
Best Things to do in Guanacaste:
- Visit popular beach towns such as Tamarindo
- Take a surf lesson
- Go on a snorkeling trip
- Explore hard to reach beaches on an ATV tour
- Take a sunset cruise
Who It’s Best For: Travelers with limited vacation time who want mostly beach time
Where to Fly Into:
When staying in the Guanacaste region, you’ll want to fly into the Liberia Airport. Depending on which part of Guanacaste you’re staying in, the drive to your hotel could be anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 hours. Be sure to take this into account when booking your hotel.
If you really want to maximize your vacation time, opt for a hotel that’s closer to the airport. There are some great beach resorts that are only about 30 to 45 minutes from the airport.
Considerations:
Many day trips from the Guanacaste area can be very long, often stretching to 10 or 11 hours due to the drive times between locations. If you plan to visit multiple destinations that are located further inland, Guanacaste may not be the best option for your stay.

3. 2 Nights Arenal & 3 Nights Manuel Antonio
Even if you only have 5 nights, it’s still possible to visit at least two destinations. Pairing a stay in Arenal with a stay in Manuel Antonio will give you a good mix of rainforest and beaches.
Overnighting in Arenal will allow you to explore a little more of the area than what a full day trip would allow.
Why We Like This Itinerary:
Even though Arenal and Manuel Antonio are approximately 5 hours away from each other, they’re close enough to each other to make it a doable itinerary without feeling like you’re spending the entire time driving.
Ideal Trip Length: 6 days/5 nights
Best Things to do in Arenal:
- Explore Arenal Volcano National Park
- Hike to La Fortuna Waterfall
- Spend some time in hot springs
- Take a hanging bridges or a wildlife tour
Who It’s Best For: Visitors with limited time that want to visit more than one location.
Where to Fly Into:
This itinerary makes the most sense if you fly in and out of San Jose since it’s located approximately 3 hours from both destinations.
Considerations:
This itinerary will work best if you arrive into San Jose early in the morning and depart out of San Jose in the afternoon.
The drive from San Jose to Arenal is around 3 hours, so an early morning arrival will still leave time for you to fit in an afternoon activity.
Departing out of San Jose in the afternoon will eliminate the need for an overnight stay near the airport.
We recommend an early morning departure for the transfer from Arenal to Manuel Antonio since it will take approximately 5 hours.

4. 2 Nights Arenal & 3 Nights Guanacaste
If you prefer, you can swap out a visit to Manuel Antonio for some time in Guanacaste instead. You’ll still get to see both the rainforest and beaches with this option.
We also like this option since you can find some beautiful beach resorts fairly close to the Liberia Airport which eliminates the need for a long transfer on departure day.
Why We Like This Itinerary:
We’ve always loved the Guanacaste area because of the numerous beach towns that are fun to explore. Whether you want to try your hand at surfing or head to one of the many beachfront restaurants, there are plenty of options for things to see and do.
The Guanacaste region also has a higher concentration of hotel accommodations, including all-inclusives. If you’re looking for a carefree getaway, Guanacaste might be a good fit for you.
Ideal Trip Length: 6 days/5 nights
Who It’s Best For: Visitors that want to visit more than one location, but would like to be closer to airport for departure.
Where to Fly Into:
You can fly in and out of Liberia, which is what we usually do. However, you could also fly into San Jose and out of Liberia since Arenal is roughly equal distance from both. Before doing this, we recommend comparing prices for the two options.
Considerations:
Similar to the Arenal and Manuel Antonio itinerary, this one works best with an early morning arrival and afternoon departure for flights.

Itinerary Ideas For 7 Nights in Costa Rica

Most first-time visitors to Costa Rica opt for at least 7 nights in Costa Rica. For this length of time, we usually recommend a maximum of two destinations. This allows enough time in each destination to fully experience them without feeling rushed.
5. 3 Nights Arenal & 4 Nights Guanacaste
For a 7-night Arenal and Guanacaste itinerary, you can simply follow the 5 night itinerary and add an extra night in each destination. This will give you 2 full days in Arenal to enjoy the rainforest and hot springs and 3 full days in Guanacaste to fully enjoy the beaches and your resort.
Why We Like This Itinerary:
This is probably one of the most popular itineraries for visitors to Costa Rica, mostly because it allows you to experience two very different sides of the country.
Guanacaste tends to be much drier than other parts of Costa Rica, especially the more inland areas, so the total experience is much different than visiting the rainforest.
Adding extra time in Guanacaste is also ideal if you choose to stay at an all-inclusive in Guanacaste since you’ll likely want to maximize your time at the resort.
Ideal Trip Length: 8 days/7 nights
Who It’s Best For: Families and others visiting for the first time
Where to Fly Into:
This would be the same as the 5-night option. You can either fly in and out of Liberia or into San Jose and out of Liberia.
Considerations:
If you really want to fit another destination into this 7-night itinerary, you could swap out one of the nights in Arenal for a night in Monteverde instead.
To be completely honest, I wouldn’t recommend that, especially if you’re traveling as a family. We find Arenal to be the better destination, particularly for families.

6. 3 Nights Arenal & 4 Nights Manuel Antonio
Similar to the Arenal and Guanacaste 7-night itinerary, you can simply add and extra night in both Arenal and Manuel Antonio for this itinerary.
Why We Like This Itinerary:
This is the best 7-night itinerary if you’re flying in and out of San Jose because you still get to experience both the rainforest and beach.
Ideal Trip Length: 8 days/7 nights
Who It’s Best For: Anyone that needs to fly in and out of San Jose
Where to Fly Into:
Even though San Jose is the most ideal airport for this itinerary, you can also opt to fly into Liberia and out of San Jose. Your drive times will be roughly the same.
Considerations:
Like the Arenal and Guanacaste itinerary, you could swap out a night in Arenal for a night in Monteverde. It’s really just a matter of choice, but keep in mind that the weather in Monteverde is much different than other areas.

7. 1 Night San Jose, 2 Nights Arenal & 4 Nights Manuel Antonio
We realize that not all flights arrive into San Jose early in the morning. If your flight arrives later in the day, fear not! You can easily adjust your itinerary to include a night in or near San Jose without sacrificing experiences.
Why We Like like This Itinerary:
While we’re not huge fans of San Jose as a destination, there are some pretty cool things to see nearby such as Braulio Carillo National Park or the La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park.
If you find yourself having to arrive later in the day, embrace the chance to see something you may have otherwise missed.
Ideal Trip Length: 8 days/7 nights
Best Things to do Near San Jose:
Who It’s Best For: Travelers arriving into San Jose later in the day or anyone that wants to add an extra stop along the way.
Where to Fly Into:
Flying in and out of San Jose works best for this itinerary.
Considerations:
If you really don’t want to spend time sightseeing around the San Jose area, we recommend getting an early start the next morning for your drive to Arenal. If you leave early enough in the morning, you’ll have time to fit in an afternoon tour in Arenal.

8. 2 Nights San Jose, 2 Nights Tortuguero, 3 Nights Arenal
This isn’t usually a popular itinerary for first-time visitors to Costa Rica but it’s a great option if you don’t care about spending time at the beach.
It’s also a nice itinerary if you’ve been to Costa Rica before and you’re looking for something a little different.
Why We Like a San Jose, Tortuguero, and Arenal Combo:
As we mentioned earlier, we don’t usually spend much time in San Jose, but we do recommend some of the nearby sights.
San Jose is also the perfect starting point if you’re including Tortuguero, located on the Caribbean coast, in your itinerary.
Tortuguero is the perfect destination for anyone looking for a more adventurous experience because it’s known for its remote location, rustic lodges, and nighttime wildlife safaris, most notably, turtle nesting.
Including it between San Jose and Arenal makes for the perfect adventure experience.
Ideal Trip Length: 8 days/7 nights
Who It’s Best For: Visitors looking for a more active and rustic experience.
Where to Fly Into:
The San Jose airport will work best for this itinerary.
Considerations:
You could do this itinerary a couple of different ways. It can easily be done in reverse if you would prefer to end closer to San Jose. Another option is to schedule 1 night in San Jose on either end.
Keep in mind that the transfer to Tortuguero is around 5 hours via ground and boat. Also note that there are set departure times for the boat portion, usually around 10:30am.
Itinerary Ideas For 10 Nights in Costa Rica

9. 2 Nights San Jose, 2 Nights Tortuguero, 3 Nights Arenal & 3 Nights Manuel Antonio
If you find that you have some extra time to spend in Costa Rica, we suggest doing a complete circle starting and ending in San Jose.
Why We Like This Itinerary:
This itinerary is going to give you a little bit of everything that Costa Rica is known for including wildlife adventure, rainforests, hot springs, and a bit of down time in Manuel Antonio.
Ideal Trip Length: 11 days/10 nights
Who It’s Best For: Anyone who wants a mix of adventure and relaxation.
Where to Fly Into:
San Jose makes the most sense for this itinerary.
Considerations:
Be mindful of your departure flight time since it’s a 3-hour drive from Manuel Antonio to San Jose. You could split the 2 nights in San Jose and schedule 1 night on either end.

10. 2 Nights San Jose, 3 Nights Arenal, 2 Nights Monteverde, & 3 Nights Manuel Antonio
If rustic lodges aren’t your thing, you can easily swap out a stay in Tortuguero for a couple of nights in the Monteverde Cloud Forest instead.
Why We Like This Itinerary:
Because of Monteverde’s location, it’s a natural add-on to itineraries that include both Arenal and Manuel Antonio.
If you decide to schedule transfers rather than renting a car, there’s a great transfer between Arenal and Monteverde that includes a combination of ground transportation and a boat ride.
It’s a great chance to get out of the car and enjoy some of the scenery for a while rather than being stuck in a car for hours.
Ideal Trip Length: 11 days/10 nights
Who It’s Best For: Visitors who want to include the cloud forest in their itinerary
Where to Fly Into:
You’ll want to fly in and out of San Jose for this itinerary.
Considerations:
Monteverde has a much different climate than the rest of Costa Rica. It’s often rainy or misty, cloudy, cooler, and much more windy than other regions. This means you’ll need to pack accordingly.

Itinerary Ideas For 12 Nights or More in Costa Rica

11. 2 Nights San Jose, 2 Nights Tortuguero, 3 Nights Arenal, 2 Nights Monteverde & 3 Nights Manuel Antonio
If you have at least 12 nights, we suggest including a combination of most of the destinations already mentioned. You can easily switch nights around to make it work for you. You’ll want to fly in and out of San Jose for this one.
12. 1 Nights San Jose, 2 Nights Tortuguero, 3 Nights Arenal, 3 Nights Manuel Antonio, & 3 Nights Guanacaste
If you’re concerned about the weather in Monteverde, you can easily switch out a couple of nights there for some time in Guanacaste instead. We like this itinerary because it’s busier towards the beginning and winds down toward the end.
Keep in mind that this itinerary option would work best if you fly into San Jose and out of Liberia.
13. 1 Night San Jose, 3 Nights Arenal, 2 Nights Monteverde, 3 Nights Manuel Antonio, & 3 Nights Guanacaste
Since Tortuguero might not be everyone’s cup of tea, an alternative option would be to swap it out for time in Monteverde instead. You could also switch this to 2 nights in San Jose and 1 night in Monteverde.
14. 3 Nights Arenal, 1 Night Monteverde, 3 Nights Manuel Antonio, & 5 Nights Guanacaste
If you’d prefer to skip San Jose altogether, an Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio and Guanacaste itinerary would be a perfect option for you.
With 5 nights in Guanacsaste, you could even split your stay in between two different destinations. You could spend a couple of nights near Tamarindo and a couple of nights further south towards Santa Theresa.
15. 2 Nights Guanacaste, 3 Nights Manuel Antonio, 1 Night San Jose, 2 Nights Tortuguero, 3 Nights Arenal, 1 Night Monteverde, & 2 Nights Guanacaste
If you want to hit all the main destinations but you’re flying in and out of Liberia, not to worry. You can easily arrange the itinerary to start and end in Guanacaste.
This one works best if your fly in and out of Liberia. However, you could rearrange things if you fly in and out of San Jose. It would just take a little bit of planning.
How to Choose the Right Costa Rica Itinerary

Choosing the best itinerary for Costa Rica is more than just deciding which destinations you want to see. You’ll also need to consider things such as drive time, budget, and who you’re traveling with. Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your itinerary.
Traveling With Kids is a Consideration
If you’re traveling as a family, especially with younger children, you may want to consider fewer destinations. Drive times between destinations are often a few hours. Younger children may get restless if they spend too much time in the car.
More Destinations Can Mean Additional Costs
This isn’t too much of an issue if you plan to rent a car, but if you are opting for shared shuttles or private transfers, additional destinations means more transfers. This can add significantly to the overall trip cost.
You Don’t Want to Spend All Your Time in the Car
If you try to fit too many destinations into a short amount of time, you’ll find that it really cuts into your vacation time. Try to maximize your time in each destination as much as possible. It’s better to experience a couple fully rather than a little bit of several.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Costa Rica?

Costa Rica’s dry season runs from December through April so this is a great time to visit. You’ll find that there’s less humidity and lots of sunshine, especially in the Guanacaste region.
Because the weather is so ideal in dry season, it also means it’s busier and more expensive, especially over school vacation weeks or holidays.
If you want to avoid peak season, we’ve found that some parts of the rainy season can be just as nice, far less busy, and often less expensive as well.
