Costa Rica Airports Guide 2026: Which Airport to Fly Into & Why

Planning a trip to Costa Rica can be so exciting because of the many amazing things to see and do. Whether you’re visiting the sun-soaked beaches of Guanacaste or the lush, green rainforests near La Fortuna, the possibilities of an unforgettable vacation are endless.

If your itinerary includes multiple destinations, you’re likely wondering which of the Costa Rica airports you should fly into.

This is one of the most common questions for travelers heading to Costa Rica and one of the most important questions you should answer prior to making your travel plans. 

Costa Rica has multiple airports, both international and domestic so choosing the right one will affect not only your itinerary but your budget and travel time.

We’re going to give you all the information you need regarding the main airports, where they are, the pros and cons of each and how to decide which one is the best option for you.

Costa Rica Airports Explained

There are two main international airports in Costa Rica so it’s important to decide which one you need to fly into before booking your flights.

In addition, you’ll need to decide if you plan to travel by air within the country since this will require advance planning not only for booking flights but for packing as well.

If you’re booking your flights with miles and have to fly into a specific airport, be sure that you’re accounting for travel time when designing your itinerary. You don’t want to put yourself in a situation where you’re driving 6 hours on the day of your departure flight.

Not only do you need to consider drive time, but road conditions are also a consideration especially if you’re visiting during the rainy season.

Main International Airports in Costa Rica

There are technically four international airports in Costa Rica, however only two of them are used primarily for commercial flights and those are the ones we’re going to focus on.

The two main international airports service different parts of the country so it’s important to figure out where you want your trip to begin and end before booking your flights.

The first international airport, Juan Santamaría (SJO), is located in the center of the country. This airport services central areas and the Caribbean coast.

The second is Daniel Oduber Quirós (LIR) which is located in Liberia. This airport primarily services the Guanacaste area but you can easily use this airport to get to Arenal and Monteverde in the central region as well.

We’ve flown into Liberia several times when our first destination was either the Arenal or Monteverde area. We did this primarily because we prefer the nonstop flights that are available into Liberia but honestly, we just prefer this airport overall.

It might be a slightly longer distance compared to flying into San Jose but, for us, the convenience of the nonstop flight outweighs the additional drive time.

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) – San José

Juan Santamaría International Airport is technically located about 30 minutes outside San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, in the Alajuela province.

It was really the only international airport in Costa Rica, for many years, that primarily served commercial flights. That changed over the years once tourism started to grow.

One of the first things you need to be aware of, if you’re flying into San Jose, is that the airport code for this airport is very similar to another airport. The airport code for the San Jose, Costa Rica airport is SJO. Don’t confuse it with SJC, which is San Jose, California’s airport code. 

This may sound silly to some people, but I’ve known people who have booked their flights into the wrong airport. This would probably be a not-so-welcome surprise for you. I’m sure it would be a very lovely vacation, but it wouldn’t exactly be the one you were expecting.

Generally speaking, you’ll want to fly into San Jose if you’re starting your itinerary anywhere in the central region or Caribbean coast.

That doesn’t mean you can’t fly into San Jose if you’re staying in other areas. It just won’t be as convenient. 

Even though destinations within Costa Rica might look close on a map, it’s a bit deceiving. Central Costa Rica is very mountainous which adds to the drive time.

Destinations and Distance From San Jose

The San Jose airport is a convenient option for anyone traveling to the Caribbean coast, central or central Pacific regions of Costa Rica. Beautiful beaches, lush rainforests and misty cloud forests are well within reach.

Here’s a list of some of the most popular destinations you can reach from San Jose along with distance and drive times if you plan to drive in Costa Rica.

Airlines Flying into San Jose (SJO)

There are some great options for airlines that fly into San Jose. Depending on your itinerary, you may want to check flight schedules into both San Jose and Liberia. Some airlines fly into both airports but only offer nonstop flights into one.

As an example, for our most recent trip, we started our itinerary in Monteverde Cloud Forest. The drive time from either airport is roughly the same, give or take a half hour or so.

We chose to fly JetBlue into Liberia instead of San Jose because the flights into San Jose connect whereas the flights into Liberia are nonstop.

Pros

• Easier Access To Certain Regions – Better for central, southern & Caribbean coast destinations.
• More International Flight Options – It’s a larger airport than Liberia so there are more flight options available depending on where you’re coming from.
• More Domestic Flight Options – It has better connectivity for domestic flights.

Cons

• Traffic – San Jose is a large city so you can expect a lot of traffic and congestion.
• It’s Busier – Because it’s a larger airport and there are more flights, it can be busier.
• Expect Delays – Since there are more flights arriving and departing, expect delays in customs.
• Rental Car Challenges– If you’re renting a car, the streets surrounding the airport can be challenging due to poor signage, aggressive drivers, confusing streets and poor GPS coverage.
• Higher Prices Near Airport– hotels and rental car companies often charge a premium due to their proximity to the airport.

Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) – Liberia

Liberia Airport is located in the Northwest region of Costa Rica so it’s convenient to the beautiful beaches of Guanacaste.

When we first started traveling to Costa Rica over 20 years ago, the Liberia Airport was a small open air terminal with ceiling fans and little to no amenities. 

However, due to the increase in tourism in the Guanacaste region, it was expanded and now offers all the amenities you would expect from an airport.

We’ve flown into both the San Jose and Liberia airports and Liberia is usually our preferred choice mainly because JetBlue offers nonstop flights from Boston to Liberia. However, we also like the ease of getting in and out. It’s a much more relaxed experience.

Destinations and Distance From Liberia Airport

Liberia Airport is the major gateway to the country’s Pacific coast and popular for travelers heading to the beautiful beaches, national parks, and resorts in the region.

Here are some of the most popular destinations from Liberia Airport, along with approximate driving distances and times.

Airlines Flying Into Liberia LIR

You’ll want to check airline schedules because some may only operate seasonally, mainly the peak tourist season

Pros

• Great Access To Beaches – It’s convenient to many of the great beach resorts on the Pacific coast.
• Less Busy – It’s smaller, easier to navigate and less busy than San Jose.
• Easier Access – Its location closer to the coast means there are fewer mountain roads to navigate.
• Better Flight Options – You’ll find more nonstop international flights into Liberia.
• Less traffic – There’s much less traffic compare to San Jose.
• More Efficient Car Rentals and Shuttles – The car rental companies are located just outside the airport premises.
  

Cons

• Fewer Flight Options – Even though there are more nonstop flight options, there are fewer options in general.
• Less Ideal For Central/Northern Areas – This airport is best for anyone traveling to the Pacific coast, Arenal/La Fortuna or Monteverde areas.
• Limited Public Transportation – It’s not located in a bustling city so public transportation is limited.
• Can Be More Expensive – Because of its proximity to the beaches of Guanacaste and its nonstop flights, it can be more expensive to fly into Liberia especially during the peak travel months.

Domestic Airports: When & Why to Use Them

The majority of travelers choose to travel by ground transportation within Costa Rica. However, domestic airports are an option and make sense in certain situations, especially if you have limited time. 

Some of the key domestic airports include Quepos Airport which is convenient if you’re spending time in the Jaco Beach or Manuel Antonio area and Tortuguero Airport which services Tortuguero village and Tortuguero National Park.

When Flights Make More Sense Than Ground Transportation

There are definitely instances when flying makes more sense than driving in Costa Rica. That being said, you don’t really need a good reason to fly but here are some examples of situations that make flying the better option.

• If Your Time Is Limited – If you are working with a limited number of days, you might want to consider booking domestic flights instead of ground transportation to maximize your time.
• Traveling To Remote Areas – There are areas in Costa Rica that are very remote such as Osa Peninsula or Nicoya. A flight will cut way down on the transfer time.
• Anyone That Gets Car Sick – Some of the roads in Costa Rica aren’t very forgiving. If you think you may get car sick, flying might make more sense for you.
• You Don’t Want To Drive – If you just prefer flying, go for it.

Top Domestic Airports

Here’s a list of some of the top domestic airports. This is not complete list but rather the most logical ones to use for some of the more popular tourist areas in the country.

• Quepos/Manuel Antonio (XQP) – Close to the beach and national park
• Drake Bay (DRK) – Gateway to Corcovado National Park
• Tamarindo (TNO) – Popular beach town with a small airport
• Puerto Jiménez (PJM) – Southern Osa Peninsula
• La Fortuna/Arenal (FON) – For volcano and adventure tourism
• Tortuguero (TTQ) – Remote Caribbean wildlife destination

Important Information Regarding Domestic Flights

If you’re considering domestic flights within Costa Rica, there are a few things you should be aware of before committing to them.

• Weight Limit For Luggage – Domestic flights usually have strict baggage limits (often 25 lbs total).
• Weather Delays – Flights could be delayed due to weather especially in the rainy season (May-Nov).
• Expensive – Domestic flights can be pricey so it might make more sense to use them sparingly unless money is no object.
• Seats Are Limited – Airplanes for domestic flights are small so book early especially if traveling during the high season (Dec–April).
• Small Planes – Small planes aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. If this sounds like you, there might be better options.

In addition to the international airports, you have the option of taking domestic flights instead of ground transportation within the country. Things to consider for domestic flights include price, availability and delays especially when traveling during the rainy season.

You’ll need to take a look at what you’d like to do and how much time you have in order to figure out what makes the most sense for you. Whatever you decide, make sure that you allow yourself enough time for travel between destinations so you don’t find yourself rushing at the last minute.
