However, if you’re in the planning stages of your first family trip to Costa Rica, you may have hit the part where you start to get a little overwhelmed. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
A trip to Costa Rica is probably one of the more difficult itineraries to plan. That’s because there are several things to consider such as logistics, drive times, and which destinations are most ideal for families.
We’ve been visiting for many years, but we had all the same questions you likely have right now. How many days should you visit? Which areas are best for a first-time visit? How many nights should you stay in each place? Is there enough for the kids to do? Trust me, we get it.
That’s exactly what motivated us to create this itinerary. We want to help take the guesswork out of planning your family trip by outlining our recommended destinations, number of nights, and suggested tours that are the most ideal for families.

Notes About This Costa Rica Family Itinerary
- If you have 7 nights in Costa Rica, we recommend limiting your itinerary to 2 stops max, especially if you have younger children. This is because of the long travel times between destinations.
- This itinerary will cover the most ideal places first-time visitors should see based on flying into San Jose.
- We’ve included a stop in La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio which will give you a good mix of rainforest and beach time.
- There are plenty of opportunities throughout this itinerary to see everything you would want to see on a first-time visit including rain forests, beaches, and wildlife.
- For anyone arriving into San Jose later in the day, we suggest an overnight in San Jose rather than driving directly to La Fortuna. We never recommend driving into the mountains at night.
- You can easily add additional days or destinations to your itinerary if you have more than 1 week.
- This itinerary includes a stay near Manuel Antonio National Park for the beach portion. If you would prefer staying in the Guanacaste area, we recommend flying into Liberia Airport instead of San Jose.

Now that we’ve given you an overview of what to expect, it’s time to break the itinerary down into a full day-by-day plan.
Keep in mind that you don’t have to see the entire country to have an amazing experience. If you only have a week, it’s better to focus on two destinations and enjoy them rather than spending your vacation constantly on the move.
Now, let’s get started!
Day 1: Arrival Day & Transfer to La Fortuna
La Fortuna is one of the most popular destinations in the country. It’s also the perfect introduction to Costa Rica because it offers a lot of what attracts people to the country in the first place like lush rainforests, diverse wildlife, and, of course Arenal Volcano.
The drive between San Jose and La Fortuna is approximately 3 hours. The best way to get there is to either book a transfer in advance, or you can rent a car if you’re feeling adventurous. We’ve done both, and our advise is to do what you feel comfortable with.
A rental car will give you flexibility and the freedom to explore at your leisure. Private transfers or shuttles will give you peace of mind.
Our Favorite Family Hotels in Arenal:
There are a lot of great hotels in the Arenal area, but these are our top picks if you’re looking for the best family experience:
→ Nayara Gardens – This is a luxury resort with beautiful casitas and villas, all with private plunge pools. The resort also has private hot springs, multiple restaurants, and a spa.
→ Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa – This resort is known for its legendary hot springs. It offers a great family experience for all ages. Breakfast is typically included in the room rate, making it a great value for families.
→ The Springs Resort & Spa – This is a secluded luxury resort with its own on-site hot springs, outdoor pool, multiple dining options, and an adventure club. It’s our favorite family resort in the La Fortuna area.

Days 2 & 3: Personalize Your Adventures in Arenal
The next couple of days are all about introducing you to what Costa Rica is known for, adventure. There are numerous activities, in and around the Arenal area, that are perfect for families.
Depending on your children’s ages and your preferred pace, you can fit in either two half-day tours or one full-day excursion each day.
If you’d rather have a mix of adventure and downtime, plan an activity in the morning and then spend the afternoon relaxing at your hotel pool or hot springs.
Pro Tip:
If you’re visiting Arenal during the rainy season, plan your tours for the morning whenever possible. Days often start out sunny, with rain showers typically moving in later in the afternoon.
Our Recommended Activities in Arenal
Arenal has some of the best tour offerings for families in all of Costa Rica. This is because there are many options for all ages.
These are some of our favorite activities that we’ve done throughout the years:
→ Zip Line Adventure – This is the quintessential Arenal experience and one of the most popular. It’s a must for anyone visiting Arenal. Older kids will especially enjoy this one, but if you have younger children, kids as young as 5 can participate, usually tandem, with an adult.
→ Hanging Bridges Tour – Hanging bridge tours are a great option for families, especially if you want something a little more relaxed than a canopy tour. The slower pace is great for younger kids, and it offers opportunities to spot lots of wildlife along the way.
→ La Fortuna Waterfall Hike – If your family is into hiking, the La Fortuna Waterfall hike is a perfect experience. This one is best for older kids since the hike can be a little challenging.
→ Sloths and Monkeys Guided Tour in Arenal Nature Walk – This tour is great for most ages. It’s a great opportunity to see all kinds of animals in their natural habitat including monkeys, toucans, and the ever-popular sloth. Who doesn’t love sloths?
→ Safari Float on the Peñas Blancas River – This is another relaxing option that offers plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife along the banks of the river. It’s ideal for all ages.
Best Hot Springs Experiences in Arenal
After your morning activity, you can either schedule another half-day activity or enjoy the facilities at your hotel. This would be a great time to visit some of the local hot springs.
Several hotels have their own thermal springs on-site. If your hotel doesn’t, you can usually purchase day passes. These are our favorite ones:
→ Tabacón Hot Springs – The Tabacón hot springs are located at the Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa. This was one of the first hot springs we ever visited in La Fortuna, and it’s still one of our favorites.
There are beautiful walking paths that wind through lush, rainforest foliage. Many areas have amazing panoramic views of Arenal Volcano in the distance.
All totaled, there are 23 hot spring pools with varying temperatures. In addition, there are regular swimming pools, lounge chairs, a restaurant, and bar.
You’ll find pretty much anything you need to keep the family entertained for a few hours, or more.
→ Hot Springs at The Springs Resort & Spa – This is another one of our favorite hot springs experiences. It has a different set up than Tabacón Hot Springs in that it has a tiered design.
The pools are surrounded by deep green foliage, plus, there’s a flume waterslide which is popular with the kids. For the parents, there are a couple of bars hidden near the hot springs. It’s a perfect way to wind down after a busy day.
Pro Tip:
When choosing a hotel in the Arenal area, factor in the cost of hot springs day passes if your hotel doesn’t have its own thermal pools. Depending on the price difference, upgrading to a hotel with on-site hot springs may end up being the better value.
Restaurants Suggestions in Arenal
After a long day, it’s time to think about dinner. There are plenty of great family-friendly restaurants in the La Fortuna area. These are just a few that we recommend:
→ La Terraza Del Arenal at Nayara Resort – This is a casual, family-friendly restaurant at Nayara Gardens that offers al fresco dining with views of the volcano.
→ Don Rufino – Great restaurant that’s been around for several years. The menu has something for everyone including beef, pasta, and seafood options.
→ Las Ventanas – A fine dining restaurant at The Spring Resort & Spa with spectacular views of the volcano. It’s a little pricey, but worth the splurge. This one might be better suited for older children though.
Day 4: Transfer to Manuel Antonio National Park
Today, you’ll head to Manuel Antonio National Park which is considered to be one of the best national parks in all of Costa Rica.
What we love most about Manuel Antonio is that it has a little bit of everything, so it can appeal to different interests and ages, making it ideal for families.
You can spend the morning looking for sloths and monkeys in the national park, relax on the beach in the afternoon, and then end the day watching the sunset over the Pacific. Sounds like a perfect day to me!

→ Parador Nature Resort & Spa – Located on a hilltop overlooking the ocean, this hotel is surrounded by lush rainforest. Room options include standard all the way up to a family suite.
→ Tulemar Resort – A beautiful hillside resort offering bungalows, casas, and private homes which are perfect for larger families.
Days 5-7: Tailor Your Stay in Manuel Antonio
The next couple of days in Manuel Antonio National Park are yours to customize however you’d like. We suggest a mix of activities and some downtime to enjoy the local beaches.
Our Recommended Activities in Manuel Antonio
→ Nature Hike in Manuel Antonio National Park – You’ll spend a couple of hours exploring the national park with your naturalist guide. They’re great at being able to spot wildlife that you might miss on your own. This tour is good for most ages, but there’s a lot of walking.
→ Boating Excursion through the Mangrove Estuaries – This is another tour that’s good for most ages. You can relax and enjoy the views as you float through the mangroves. There’s plenty of opportunity to see all kinds of wildlife on this one too.
→ Manuel Antonio Surf Lesson – Surf lessons are a fun option, especially if you have older kids. They usually cover the basics with this lesson, but if your kids really enjoy it, there are private lessons available that allow for a more one-on-one experience. If you have children that are too young to participate, parents can still watch the lessons with the younger kids from the beach.
→ Kayak Adventure through the Mangrove Estuaries of Damas Island – This tour is an alternative to the boating tour. You’ll have the opportunity to see the same things, it’ll just be with more physical activity.
Recommended Restaurants in Manuel Antonio
→ La Luna – Located at Gaia Hotel, this restaurant has panoramic views and an extensive menu. A kid’s menu is also available so it’s a good option for families.
→ Ronny’s Place – Another hilltop restaurant with spectacular views, this restaurant has a great menu which includes pasta, beef, chicken, and seafood options. We like that it has a casual atmosphere which is always great for kids.
Day 8: Transfer to San Jose International Airport
Today, it’s time to say goodbye to Costa Rica. You’ll make your way back to San Jose International Airport by shuttle or rental car for your departure flight home.

There are a few things to keep in mind when planning a trip to Costa Rica, especially when it comes to logistics. Here are some final tips to consider before finalizing your plans.
Plan for Longer Drive Times Than Expected
While Costa Rica looks small on a map, travel times between destinations are actually longer than most people realize. This is due to winding mountain roads, traffic, and road conditions.
That’s why we recommend limiting a one-week itinerary to 2 stops max, especially if you’re traveling with younger children.
Don’t Overpack Your Itinerary
One of the biggest mistakes anyone can make, when visiting Costa Rica, is trying to see too much in one trip or trying to visit too many places.
Costa Rica has a great mix of beaches, rainforests, wildlife, and adventure activities, but you don’t need to visit 4 or 5 destinations to see it all.
If you’re strategic about the destinations you choose, you can easily see all of these things without having to rush from one place to another.

Choose Activities Based on Your Children’s Ages
Not every activity is suitable for every age group. While older children may enjoy ziplining, surfing, and longer hikes, younger children may prefer wildlife tours, safari floats, hanging bridges, and beach days.

Even during the dry season, weather conditions can vary significantly between destinations. It’s a good idea to pack lightweight rain jackets, comfortable walking shoes, swimsuits, and quick-dry clothing.

Book Popular Tours in Advance
Costa Rica’s most popular tours can fill up quickly, especially during holiday periods and school breaks. If there are certain experiences your family doesn’t want to miss, consider booking them before your trip.
Allow Time to Enjoy Your Hotel
Many of Costa Rica’s family-friendly resorts offer hot springs, pools, wildlife trails, beaches, and activities on-site. Don’t feel like you need to spend every day on a tour to have a memorable experience.
Consider Your Arrival and Departure Flights
If you’re arriving later in the day, we suggest spending your first night near the airport rather than tackling a long drive. We never recommend driving into the mountains at night because of the lack of lights and road signs.
Also, many of the roads can be very narrow in spots, which can be challenging even during the day, never mind at night.

What’s the worst month to visit Costa Rica?
If you plan to visit the Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio area, September and October are the least ideal times to visit. You can experience heavy rain and a lot of humidity during these months. However, if you plan to visit the Caribbean coast, September and October are actually the nicest months to visit.
