Croatia’s Adriatic coastline comes alive in summer, attracting visitors to its gorgeous islands and coastal towns. Thanks to a reliable ferry system, island-hopping between top destinations couldn’t be easier.
Its reputation for luxury hotels, medieval architecture and fabulous cuisine has inspired many travelers to add Croatia to the top of their travel bucket list, including ours!
While the coast gets much of the attention, inland Croatia is a hidden gem. With crisp autumn hikes in national parks and snowy mountain slopes perfect for winter skiing, it offers something for every season.

Deciding when to visit Croatia will be one of the most crucial steps when planning your vacation so you definitely want to be strategic.
If you plan to lounge on a beach for part of your stay but arrive too early in the season, the water temperatures may not be ideal. Island-hopping in November sounds like a great idea but you might be disappointed to find that many ferry services are reduced or suspended after the peak tourist season.

Best Overall Months: May, June, September
May, June and September are ideal months to visit Croatia because they strike the perfect balance between great weather, fewer crowds and reasonable prices.
In addition to the nice weather, you’ll see fewer tourists during these months since May and September are technically the shoulder season. You’ll probably see more people in June but it will still be less than the peak months of July and August.
For Beach Weather: July–August
If your main goal is to get the best beach weather, July through August is when you want to visit. These are the months that bring the peak summer weather with warm water and very little rain.
It’s also the best time for island-hopping since ferry services between islands and coastal towns are running at their maximum frequency.
For Fewer Crowds: April, May, September, October
For fewer crowds, April through May and September through October will be the optimal months for you.
The summer rush has either not started or has just ended so it will be easier to get reservations for restaurants and hotels. There will be also be less crowds for attractions and ferries.
For Budget Travelers: March, November
Anyone looking for deals to Croatia should consider visiting in March or November.
These months are well outside the peak tourist months so flights, accommodations and car rentals will be at some of the lowest prices without getting into the much colder winter months.

We visited both regions during our recent trip in September. Inland areas were much cooler in the morning but warmed up nicely by mid-day.
