How to Plan A Free Day in Prague
In addition to all the free things to see and do, another thing that helps make Prague so affordable is how walkable the city is.
Most of the major sights are close enough that you can easily explore them on foot so there’s no need for public transportation.
Because of that, we’ve organized this guide by neighborhood so you can fully enjoy one area before moving on to the next.
Let’s dig in!

A Morning in Malá Strana (Lesser Town) & Hradčany
Whether you’re staying in Malá Strana or somewhere else in the city, we recommend starting your day in Lesser Town.
Early mornings are the nicest time to roam around the streets because it’s quiet and the crowds haven’t arrived yet, especially near the castle.
This time of day is also one of the best opportunities to get photos without large crowds in the background.
Free Things to Do in Malá Strana

Malá Strana is a charming, quiet neighborhood just across the Charles Bridge from Old Town.
Its peaceful, picturesque streets are a welcome break from the busy Stare Mesto area, especially in the early morning hours.
There are beautiful historical buildings in Malá Strana, including several embassies tucked away along its streets but there’s so much more to see.
Here are some of the best free things to do in Malá Strana.
Where to Stay in Malá Strana:
- Hotel Pod Věží – Cozy boutique hotel next to Charles Bridge with historic charm and modern comforts.
- Aria Hotel – Beautiful boutique hotel just a few minute’s walk from Charles Bridge and Prague Castle.

Free Things to Do in the Hradčany District
Hradčany is the neighborhood where you’ll find Prague Castle, perched high on a hill so it offers amazing views over the city.
While the castle is obviously the main attraction, don’t miss wandering the little streets around it. Many of them have spectacular views over Prague’s rooftops and probably some of the best in the entire city.
You’ll also find plenty of small shops, cafés, and restaurants tucked into the streets. We love grabbing a coffee or a cold drink here and enjoying the views and activity so we highly recommend stopping at one of them.

Free Things to See and Do on Kampa Island

Kampa Island is technically part of Malá Strana, but it’s so pretty it deserves its own section.
It’s a man-made island that dates back to the 12th century, created when a canal called Devil’s Stream was built to separate it from Malá Strana.
The result is a really charming area with tree-lined streets, riverside promenades, and plenty of cafés, restaurants, and little parks so it’s a nice place to explore.
Here are some of the best free things to do on Kampa Island.
Best Places to Eat on Kampa Island:
An Afternoon in Old Town (Stare Mesto) and the Jewish Quarter (Josefov)
After lunch, you can head over to Old Town by way of Charles Bridge where you can enjoy the views of the Vltava River from as you stroll along.
The bridge is more than a connection between Old Town and Malá Strana.
You’ll often find musicians, street performers, and artists selling their work so we highly recommend taking your time so you can fully appreciate the experience.
Things to Do in Old Town for Free
Old Town is packed with free things to see and do so you can easily spend an entire afternoon exploring the whole area.
We recommend starting at Old Town Square and then wandering down the nearby streets. There are tons of cute alleys and little squares to explore.

Free Riverfront Activities

If you have time, we highly recommend walking along the city’s riverbanks.
Heading north from Charles Bridge, you can walk along the Vltava River embankment and view the departure point for some of the river cruises. You’ll also find some floating restaurants and breweries here.
South of Charles Bridge, heading towards the Dancing House, you’ll see pedal boats, riverside restaurants, and social spots like the Capadlo Summer Terrace where you can stop for something to drink.
