Mandarin Oriental Prague Review: Luxury Stay in Mala Strana

Want a luxury hotel in Prague that doesn’t feel like a city hotel? Mandarin Oriental might be a perfect fit for you!
When staying in major cities, hotels can sometimes feel a bit too corporate for some people. While that might work for business trips, it doesn’t always deliver the relaxed atmosphere you want on vacation.
That’s where the Mandarin Oriental Prague stands out.
Nestled in the charming Malá Strana neighborhood, this hotel offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city — without feeling disconnected.
But is the experience worth the price tag, and does its location put you too far from Prague’s top attractions? These are a couple of the questions we had when planning our stay.
In this Mandarin Oriental Prague review, we’ll break down what makes it unique and whether it’s the right choice for your stay. Plus, we’ll give you insight into why we loved this hotel!

Mandarin Oriental Prague Overview
If you’re looking to stay in a place that combines centuries-old history with quiet, refined luxury, the Mandarin Oriental Prague delivers all of that and more.
Tucked away in a former monastery, it offers a peaceful escape right in the middle of the city.
After staying there ourselves, we’re sharing our experience to help you decide if this historic hotel is the right choice for your stay.

Location & First Impressions
The Mandarin Oriental Prague was the first hotel we stayed at when we arrived in the Czech Republic.
We were a little worried we might regret not staying in Old Town for this part of our trip but honestly, we had nothing to worry about.
Our stay at the Mandarin Oriental Prague ended up being one of the true highlights of our visit.
Location:
Set in the quiet neighborhood of Malá Strana, on the left bank of the Vltava River, the Mandarin Oriental Prague is perfectly positioned near Prague Castle and surrounded by charming cobblestone streets ideal for an evening stroll.
This elegant district is also home to several embassies, many housed in beautifully restored historical buildings that give the neighborhood its refined, timeless character.
While we loved everything about our time in Prague, we quickly realized that we actually preferred Malá Strana over Old Town.
Its peaceful, village-like atmosphere felt like a welcome contrast to the busier Old Town.

First Impressions:
Check-in was quick and easy which is always a good start. What surprised us most was how calm and peaceful the hotel felt, especially considering it’s right in the middle of the city.
The overall atmosphere leans toward understated luxury rather than anything flashy or over-the-top. It’s elegant without trying too hard.
Set in a former 14th-century monastery, the Mandarin Oriental Prague is composed of several interconnected buildings, each with its own architectural style.
This layered design reflects how the complex expanded over six centuries, with traces of history still visible throughout today.

When the hotel opened in 2006, a lot of effort went into preserving the original character of the space and you can really feel that throughout the property. It feels like a hidden oasis in the middle of the city.
Even though the hotel sits in a quiet neighborhood, it’s incredibly convenient to major sights including the Lennon Wall, Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle.
We loved wandering through the charming side streets between the hotel and the castle. With so many great restaurants and one-of-a-kind shops, it’s easy to spend hours exploring the area.
📍 Location Snapshot
The Mandarin Oriental Prague sits on the left bank of the Vltava River in the charming Malá Strana (Lesser Town) district, a quieter, more romantic side of the city.
Here’s how long it takes to reach some of Prague’s top attractions from the hotel on foot:
|
Attraction |
Walking Time |
Notes |
|---|---|---|
|
Charles Bridge |
~7 minutes |
Just across the river — easy stroll with great photo spots along the way. |
|
Prague Castle |
~30 minutes |
Scenic uphill walk through cobblestone streets — one of the prettiest routes in the city. |
|
Old Town Square |
~20 minutes |
Cross the Charles Bridge into the heart of the Old Town. |
|
Lennon Wall |
~3 minutes |
Practically next door — a colorful, must-see symbol of peace. |
|
Kampa Park |
~2 minutes |
Quiet green space by the river, perfect for morning walks or coffee breaks. |
|
Petřín Hill & Lookout Tower |
~15 minutes |
Great for panoramic views; take the funicular if you prefer to skip the climb. |
Flair Pro Insight: Even though Prague Castle is fairly close to the hotel, it’s a bit of a strenuous walk since a good portion of it is uphill. This is the reason for the longer walking time. The actual time will depend on how quickly you walk and your fitness level.
Deluxe King Room Overview
There are a total of 99 rooms in the hotel, divided among 16 different room and suite categories. Many offer views over the streets of Malá Strana, while others feature glimpses of Prague Castle.
We booked a superior king room but were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a deluxe king room, located in the spa building.
When we were shown to our room, we were led across the parking lot, which we thought was a little unusual.
As it turns out, there’s a corridor connecting the spa building with the main one. Walking outside was simply the shortest route between the two.

Size
The room itself was much larger than we expected, especially for the price.
Rooms range in size from 345 square feet up to approximately 1,900 square feet. The Deluxe King Room measures about 409 square feet, which is a very generous size.
When we spend an extended amount of time in a destination, we’ll usually try to book a larger room so we have more space to spread out.
Honestly, this room was such a nice size, we wouldn’t have minded spending several nights there.
Bed
Our bed was incredibly comfortable, with goose down bedding that made it feel really cozy. I was especially happy to see a proper blanket included.
Little touches like that make a big difference. The room just felt welcoming and relaxing, a perfect spot to unwind after a day out in Prague.
Rooms come in different categories, with king, queen, or two twin beds. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or with family, there’s a setup that works.
Every detail, from the soft sheets to the plush mattress, is designed to make sure you get a great night’s sleep.

Decor and Amenities
There was a small tray with fresh fruit and a welcome note sitting on an accent table when we arrived, which we thought was a nice touch.
The rooms are beautifully decorated with modern decor that leans toward Asian influences with Czech touches.
One thing that really stood out to us was that they include adapters in all the rooms. This came in handy because I realized the one I brought couldn’t be used with my hair dryer, so I was very thankful for this thoughtful inclusion.
Other luxury features include an HD TV, amazing plush robes, and a Nespresso coffee machine. Not too shabby!
Deluxe King Bathroom
The bathroom is beautiful and well laid out with plenty of room to move.
Many rooms have deep soaking tubs if you’re looking to relax after a long day of exploring. There’s also a separate shower, along with luxury bath products and plush robes to round out the luxury bath experience.
Another nice feature is heated floors. We didn’t really need them when we visited since temperatures were in the 80s, but it’s a nice feature if you’re visiting Prague during the winter months.

View
Our room had two large windows that overlooked a small sidestreet.
This was fine for us since we didn’t plan to spend a lot of time in the room.
As beautiful as Prague Castle is, we saw plenty of it during our visit, so an upgraded room with a view didn’t make sense for us and we definitely didn’t miss it.
Dining at Mandarin Oriental Prague
The Mandarin Oriental Prague has one fine dining restaurant, Monastiq. Formerly known as Spices, it was renamed in 2024 and now focuses on Czech cuisine with a modern twist.
While we didn’t dine at Monastiq for dinner, we enjoyed breakfast at the Monastiq Terrace, an outdoor spot overlooking the courtyard, which also offers an all-day menu.

Their breakfast service offers both a buffet and à la carte option, but we chose the buffet, which had more than enough options to satisfy our needs.
They offered everything from bakery items and cereal to pancakes and charcuterie. And great coffee. Can’t forget the coffee.

The terrace was a relaxing place to start our day. A bonus was that they had blankets for colder mornings laid out on the chairs for anyone who needed one, another small detail that made a big impression. There are also heaters mounted overhead to add to your comfort on cooler days.
In addition to the restaurant, there is the Monastiq Bar & Lounge, located just off the lobby. You can get cocktails, beer, soda, coffee, and a selection of small bites and dishes like sandwiches, salads, and burgers.

We didn’t have a chance to grab drinks in the lounge but we sat there one morning as we waited for our walking tour guide. They were nice enough to get us some coffee to take with us on our tour.
This was much needed and very appreciated since our tour was fairly early in the morning on the day after we arrived.
Service & Staff
We found the service and staff at Mandarin Oriental Prague to be impeccable.
When we booked our room as MO members, we requested our two benefits, one of which was an early check-in. We had expected to arrive around 12 pm, but due to flight delays, we didn’t arrive until around 4 pm.
They were kind enough to adjust it at check-in and switch it to a different benefit so we didn’t miss out, something not all hotels would do.
Everyone was so warm and friendly. They went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect.
What You’re Really Paying For at the Mandarin Oriental Prague
Staying at the Mandarin Oriental Prague isn’t just about having a nice room, it’s about the whole experience.
Its location in a beautifully renovated monastery makes everything feel calm, quiet, and relaxing.
It’s not a typically designed hotel. Instead, you’ll see arched stone hallways, a spa built in a former chapel, and rooms that mix historic charm with modern comfort.
The hotel is tucked away in Malá Strana, one of Prague’s most romantic neighborhoods, so you’re close to everything (like Charles Bridge) but it still feels like a peaceful retreat.
It might be a bit of a splurge, but if you’re into unique stays with character and top-notch service, it delivers.

Getting to Mandarin Oriental Prague
The two best ways to get to Mandarin Oriental Prague is by car or private transfer. We rented a car since we were moving around quite a bit. If you’re staying in Prague the whole time, a car isn’t necessary.

By Car:
Driving in Prague can be challenging, especially in Malá Strana, where streets are narrow, cobblestoned, and often one-way.
The hotel courtyard entrance is on a corner and can be tricky to spot. If you are arriving by car, it’s easiest to approach slowly and consider valet parking, which is highly recommended.
The courtyard doesn’t have designated parking spaces, so you’ll need to follow the staff’s guidance to avoid blocking other vehicles. Weekends tend to be quieter, but during busy periods, maneuvering may take a bit of patience.
Private Transfer:
If you really want a no-stress visit, we recommend a private transfer from the airport. You won’t have to worry about driving through narrow streets or sharing the road with trams which can be a little unnerving.

We recommend arranging a private transfer rather than taking a taxi in Prague. Taxi services aren’t strictly regulated, which can sometimes lead to overcharging. If you do take a taxi, make sure to confirm the fare upfront before getting in.
Affordable Luxury: How to Experience the Mandarin Oriental Prague for Less
If you’re dreaming of a stay at the Mandarin Oriental Prague but want to avoid the premium price tag on every night, the good news is, you can absolutely enjoy this five-star property without blowing your budget.
With a little planning and flexibility, affordable luxury is within reach, even at one of Prague’s most unique hotels. Here are a few tips for ways to experience this beautiful property for less.

Travel in the Shoulder or Off-Season
Rates at the Mandarin Oriental Prague tend to be lower during the shoulder seasons (especially late autumn and early spring), and even more affordable in winter, except during the holiday rush.
Visiting during these quieter months not only saves you money, but also gives you a more peaceful experience in both the hotel and the city.
🏷️ Affordable Luxury Tip #1:
Don’t overlook winter! Imagine cozy mornings in a centuries-old monastery-turned-hotel, followed by crowd-free sightseeing and café hopping. Let’s not forget all the great comfort food the city is known for. Perfect on a winter’s day!
Book Weekday Stays for Better Rates
Weekend rates can spike due to weddings, leisure getaways, and seasonal demand. Try booking your stay during the week, when occupancy often dips.
Weekday pricing at luxury hotels like Mandarin Oriental can be noticeably lower, and you’ll still enjoy full access to all the amenities and service.
Use Points or Premium Travel Credit Cards
While Mandarin Oriental doesn’t have a traditional points-based loyalty program, some premium travel credit cards offer partnerships or flexible points that can be redeemed for stays here.
You may also find rewards portals that feature Mandarin Oriental properties.
💡 Affordable Luxury Tip #2:
If you have an American Express Platinum or similar card, check their Fine Hotels & Resorts program. Mandarin Oriental often participates and includes perks like room upgrades, breakfast, or late checkout.
Look for Direct Booking Offers or Seasonal Packages
The best deals often come straight from the source. Check Mandarin Oriental Prague’s official website for exclusive offers, like packages that include breakfast, spa credits, or even airport transfers.
Often you’ll find deals, especially in the off-season, for free nights. These can add serious value without adding to your total spend.
Sign Up For the Fans of MO Program
Mandarin Oriental’s Fans of MO program offers several amazing benefits including unique experiences, privileges and special offers.
You can also choose up to two benefits for each stay including early check-in or late check-out.
However, you can also choose breakfast or dining credits as your benefit. This is a great way to add value to your stay if it’s not already included.
Split Your Stay for a Taste of Luxury
If staying multiple nights at the Mandarin Oriental doesn’t quite fit your budget, consider making it part of a split-stay itinerary.
Spend a night or two soaking in the historic charm and quiet luxury of the hotel, then switch to a more budget-friendly (but still stylish) property for the rest of your trip. This lets you indulge in five-star service without paying five-star prices the whole time.

If you decide to split your stay between two hotels, consider choosing ones in different neighborhoods. That’s what we did, and it gave us the chance to explore multiple parts of the city more in-depth without ever feeling too far from where we were staying.
