3-Day Dubrovnik Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Old Town, Beach Time, and Mount Srđ
Day 2: Cavtat, Elaphiti Islands, or Peljesac Peninsula Day Trip
Day 3: Lokrum, Fort Lovrijenac, Optional Kayaking or Beach Time, City Walls
Notes About This Itinerary
Day 1: An Introduction to Old Town
Today, you’ll start to get acquainted with the Old Town. There’s a lot to see so we recommend taking things slow and trying not to rush through anything.
We’re building in some down time on purpose for those occasions when you just want to relax, get away from the crowds, or simply want to explore a little more.
This slower pace also makes for a much more romantic experience instead of constantly rushing from one activity to another.
Morning
Breakfast
Many hotels in Dubrovnik include breakfast in the room rate, however, if it’s not included with your stay or you simply feel like eating somewhere else, we recommend starting your day with a leisurely breakfast at Dubrovka 1836.
We chose this spot mainly for its location just outside Pile Gate, which is one of the best starting points for exploring Old Town. This is also where many organized tours begin.
That said, it also happens to have incredible views of the city walls, the Adriatic, and Fort Lovrijenac, so it’s a win-win.

The menu here is fairly simple, with a few omelette options, a classic bacon and eggs, and a continental breakfast.
Honestly, what you’re really here for is the view. Everything else is just a bonus.
We recommend getting to the restaurant right when it opens at 8am because you’ll want to start your Old Town tour as early as possible.
If you decide against breakfast, you can always come back for lunch or dinner on another day.
💕 Couples Tip: This is a great slow start if you want a relaxed morning together before exploring. Grab a table and some coffee and enjoy the views!
After breakfast, it’s time to head off on your tour of Old Town!
👉 Old Town Walking Tour
Morning Walking Tour
So why aren’t we starting with a visit to the city walls?
Many guides will tell you to start with the city walls, but we actually think there’s a better way to begin your visit.
We think it makes more sense to begin with a tour of Old Town so you can get your bearings first. That way, when you do walk the walls, you’ll have a much better sense of the city and how everything fits together.
For the tour, you can easily explore on your own or you can sign up for an organized tour with a professional guide.
If you choose the self-guided option , we recommend starting just inside Pile Gate, which will bring you to the very beginning of Stradun.
Stradun is the main street that runs through the center of Old Town and it’s definitely worth a slow stroll versus a quick pass through.
Highlights To See Along Stradun Include:

If you would rather have some historical context, instead of wandering around aimlessly, a tour might be the better option for you.
We usually opt for signing up for a tour because the guides are very knowledgeable and really good at giving you recommendations for things to do and places to eat. This helps us to formulate a plan for the rest of our stay.
Organized tours typically take about 1.5 hours and you can choose between shared or private ones. Here are a couple of great options…
Dubrovnik Old Town Walking Tour Options:
→ Best Value – Shared Small Group Walking Tour
→ Upgrade – Private Romantic Walking Tour (Ideal for couples who want a slower, more personal experience.)
After exploring Stradun, we recommend venturing off into the side streets. This is where you’ll find some of the most beautiful parts of the city.
Don’t worry about losing your way. Getting a little lost together in Old Town is honestly one of the best parts of the experience.
Also, don’t forget to keep your eye out for more must-see sights.
Things to See as You Explore Dubrovnik’s Side Streets

Afternoon
Lunch
After you’ve had a chance to explore for a while, you’ve probably worked up a bit of an appetite. Luckily, you don’t have to go too far to find some great lunch options.
Some of Our Favorite Lunch Spots:
🍴Barba – Casual, fast lunch spot famous for octopus burgers, shrimp rolls, and fresh seafood sandwiches; perfect for a quick bite between sightseeing activities.
🍴Lucin Kantun – Small, tucked-away restaurant in a narrow side street offering creative Croatian tapas-style dishes and great wine. This is our top pick for couples since the intimate setting and small plates make it ideal for a leisurely lunch together.
🍴Pizzeria Mirakul – A small, casual pizza spot tucked into one of Old Town’s narrow side streets, serving freshly made pizzas with thin crusts and classic toppings.
💕 Couples Tip: Choose a tucked-away terrace for a quieter, more intimate lunch away from Stradun.
Afternoon Sightseeing
Now that you’ve had a chance to refuel, what’s next?
We recommend using this time to visit any places on the list that you didn’t make it to yet or, if you’re up for it, you can check out these great places:
Other Must-See Spots in Old Town
💕 Couples Tip: Late afternoon at the harbor and Porporela Pier is especially beautiful once crowds thin out. This is one of those quiet, romantic spots where you can just sit together and watch the boats go by.
Alternatively, if you need a little break from the crowds, we recommend spending a little time outside of Old Town to get a taste for what the rest of Dubrovnik is like.
Alternative Activity Ideas:

Evening
Sunset Views from Mount Srđ
This one is non-negotiable. You need to view the sunset from the top of Mount Srđ. The view over Dubrovnik, the islands, and the coast is stunning and not to be missed.
You have a couple of options for getting there. The cable car is the easiest and most popular. To reach the cable car, just make your way to the lower station located just outside Ploče Gate.
The ride itself is just a few minutes each way but there can be long lines in the peak summer months, so be sure to build a little extra time into your schedule.
Another option is to take a sunset tour. These tours typically stop at a couple of scenic viewpoints, like Dubrovnik Bridge, before heading to the top of Mount Srđ.
Sunset here is, by far, one of the most romantic experiences in Dubrovnik. Be sure to arrive early for a good viewing spot.

If you’re up for a little exercise, you can also hike to the top of Mount Srđ via The Way of the Cross. This scenic hike will take anywhere from about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on your pace.
Once there, you can find yourself a spot and watch one of the most spectacular sunsets anywhere, hands down.
Pro Tip: If you hike to the top of Mount Srđ, be sure to have appropriate equipment for the hike back down since it will be much darker. Alternatively, you can purchase a one-way cable car ticket for a trip down the mountain. If you do this, you’ll need to purchase it at the lower station before setting out on your hike. Tickets aren’t sold at the top.
So, what time is sunset in Dubrovnik? That’s a very good question!
Sunset times vary from around 4:30pm in the winter to around 8:30pm in the summer, so be sure to plan accordingly depending on the time of year you plan to visit.
Dinner
In addition to the sunset, another reason to visit the top of Mt. Srđ is the restaurant located at the top.
Panorama is a popular place due to its unparalleled views of the surrounding area. Dining here will require advance planning though.
If you want to snag a table here, you’ll need to book a reservation months in advance. Keep in mind that Panorama is closed in the off season.
If you can get a reservation, this makes for an incredibly romantic dinner especially if you time your reservation to coincide with sunset. The views at sunset are unlike anything else in Dubrovnik.
If you decide against dining at Panorama, we have some other options listed below.

Can’t get a reservation at Panorama? Restaurant Pjerin is our alternate pick.
Restaurant Pjerin is a beautiful seaside restaurant, just outside Old Town, with some of the best views in Dubrovnik.
To get here, it’s about a 10-15 minute walk from Ploče Gate so you can easily head here after disembarking from the cable car.
Set within Villa Dubrovnik, it offers a more elevated and quieter dining experience with a menu that leans toward Mediterranean.
However, the real highlight is the terrace overlooking the water with distant views of the Old Town walls. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic dinner.
Another reason we love Restaurant Pjerin is that you don’t need to go too far for pre or post-dinner drinks.
Galanto Bar is also located within Villa Dubrovnik and it’s one of only a few rooftop bars in Dubrovnik, so, as you can imagine, the views are stunning. It’s a perfect way to end your first day in Dubrovnik.

👉 11 Best Dubrovnik Restaurants with a View
Pro Tip: If you opt for a private Mount Srđ sunset tour, most operators are flexible with pick-up and drop-off. We recommend asking to be dropped at Villa Dubrovnik to save you the 10–15 minute walk, which includes some pretty steep hills.
Did you arrive in Dubrovnik later today?
Not a problem! If you don’t have a full day for exploring Dubrovnik today, we still recommend doing an Old Town walking tour and then skipping the afternoon activity.
After that, you can pick up the itinerary again with the cable car up Mount Srđ. There’s still plenty of time in the next couple of days to explore more of Old Town.
Day 2: Explore Beyond Dubrovnik’s Old Town
Today is the perfect time to step beyond the city walls and take a break from the crowds. Consider getting out on the water to visit a nearby coastal town or island, or head inland to experience the countryside and sample some of Croatia’s local food and wine.
Morning
Breakfast
If you’re starting your day in the Old Town area, we recommend Rudjer Restaurant & Bar. We actually came across this restaurant when we were walking the city walls.
It’s tucked away in a quiet corner of Old Town and offers a decent breakfast menu. It includes things like freshly squeezed orange juice, banana pancakes, and Eggs Benedict. What more could you need?

After breakfast, it’s time to choose your activity of the day which will introduce you to a different side of the Dubrovnik area.

Recommended Half-Day Tours
Cavtat Option:
A 30 to 45-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik’s Old Harbor will bring you to Cavtat, a small harbour town that feels like Dubrovnik with the volume turned down.
You’ll find waterfront cafés, swimming spots, and a pretty promenade that you can stroll along.
Tickets typically cost around 21,00 EUR for a round trip ticket. Boats to Cavtat typically operate from May to October with more frequent departures in July and August.
You can purchase tickets directly from ticket agents near the departure point for the boats in Old Town harbor or you can purchase tickets in advance from Adriana Cavtat. We suggest getting to the harbor early if you’re visiting in the summer months.
While there, we recommend grabbing lunch at one of the restaurants along the waterfront promenade.
Posejdon has a perfect spot right on the water. We also like their lunch menu because it has a good selection of typical lunch items including pizza, burgers, and salads.

Elaphiti Islands Half-Day Option:
We usually suggest a tour versus taking the ferry to the Elaphiti Islands if you’re only in town for 2 or 3 days. A tour will allow you to maximize your time without having to think about the logistics and timing of the ferries.
A lot of tours to the Elaphiti Islands are full-day tours lasting 8-10 hours. However, if you like the idea of seeing the Elaphiti Islands but don’t want to commit to a full day, there are some half-day options available.
Most tend to be private but there are a couple of small group ones available. The shorter tours typically stop at 2 or 3 spots whereas the full day ones will stop at 5 or 6.
Half-Day Elaphiti Islands Tour Options:

Recommended Full-Day Tours
Peljesac Peninsula Option:
A full-day tour to the Peljesac Peninsula is the perfect way to spend the day for food and wine lovers.
The Pelješac Peninsula is a laid-back coastal area about an hour outside Dubrovnik, known for its scenic views, small seaside towns, and incredible local wine.
It’s a great place to slow things down whether that means wine tasting, driving along the coast, or stopping for fresh oysters near Mali Ston.
Full-Day Peljesac Peninsula Tour Options:
Elaphiti Islands Full-Day Option:
A full-day boat tour through the Elaphiti Islands will bring you to a few more stops versus the half-day tour. This usually includes hitting the three main islands of Kolocep, Lopud and Šipan in addition to quiet coves for swimming and snorkeling.
Full-Day Elaphiti Islands Tour Options:
Mljet Island Option:
Our last option for a full-day tour is to Mljet Island. The main draw here is the Mljet National Park which has numerous trails along with a two saltwater lakes.
There are plenty of things to do on the island including renting bikes, hiking, or kayaking out to St. Mary’s Island.
Ticket prices for entry to the park is between 20,00 and 30,00 EUR per person depending on the time of year you visit. This includes the roundtrip boat ride to St. Mary’s Island.
If you want to kayak to the island instead of taking the included boat ride, this will be an additional cost, usually around 25,00 EUR.
Getting to Mljet is fairly easy. You can take a ferry on your own or you can sign up for an organized tour.
The ferry will take around 1.5 hours and departure times will vary depending on the time of year. There are 3 main ferry ports in Mljet so you’ll want to be sure that you arrive into the one closest to the park which is Polače.
If you visit in the off-season, please note that ferry service is limited and service into some ports may be suspended altogether. It’s best to check prior to your arrival.
Full-Day Mljet Island Tour Options:
💕 Couples Pick: If you want the most romantic Day 2 experience, our top recommendation is a private boat charter to the Elaphiti Islands or a private wine tour on the Pelješac Peninsula. Both offer quieter experiences away from crowds.

Afternoon
Lunch
If you chose a half-day tour for the morning, you’re probably ready to recharge those batteries again, so we suggest grabbing some lunch back in Old Town harbor.
Lokanda Peskarija is only steps from the water harbor, so you can enjoy the views while dining. There’s a good selection of sandwiches on the menu including sea bass, shrimp, and more classic options like caprese or prosciutto.
Since this restaurant is located right near the pier, it tends to be a popular choice for people returning from tours, so it’s a good idea to make a reservation in advance.
Free Time
For anyone that has a free afternoon, you can spend more time wandering through Old Town to visit any spots you may have missed on day 1, especially if you arrived later in the day.
If you’re up for more activity, this is also a good time to fit in a sea kayaking tour around the outside of the city walls.

This is one of the most popular activities in Dubrovnik so be sure to book in advance during the peak summer months to ensure you get your preferred time.
Pro Tip: Keep your fitness level in mind before booking a kayaking tour. It’s more physically demanding than it looks.
Evening
Tonight, we suggest exploring outside the city walls for a bit, specifically Lapad.
The waterfront promenade in Lapad has a completely different feel from Old Town. It’s lively but it has a more relaxed, resort-style feel.
Pre-Dinner Drinks
Once you arrive in Lapad, head to Cave Bar More for some pre-dinner drinks. Cave Bar More is exactly what it sounds like.
Located in Hotel More, this unique bar offers indoor seating with little nooks and uneven shapes that make it feel cozy. The lighting is low and warm, which gives it a relaxed, slightly moody atmosphere, especially at night.
If you prefer a more open area, there’s also a seaside terrace which is a great place to watch the sunset. Reservations aren’t accepted here, so if you want to get a seat during sunset, you’ll need to get there early.

Dinner
After drinks, you can head over to Restaurant More, also part of Hotel More, for dinner. This restaurant has a beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking Lapad Bay and the menu has a little something for everyone including pasta, beef, and fish dishes.
Afterwards, a walk along the promenade is a must. It’s lined with several restaurants, bars, and gelato spots, so it’s the perfect place for a post-dinner stroll.
Day 3: Lokrum Island, Free Time, City Walls
Day 3 is about hitting the spots in the city you haven’t already seen including the famous city walls. However, we’re purposely saving that for later in the day but, no worries, there’s plenty still to see aside from the walls.
Morning
Breakfast
Since there’s no reason to rush today, we suggest having a leisurely breakfast to start your day. One of our favorite spots is Gradska Kavana Arsenal.
This waterfront café is located in the heart of Old Town and offers a large terrace overlooking Luža Square and a separate covered terrace with stunning harbor views.
Either terrace is nice but we prefer the harbor view. Watching the boats sail in and out of the harbor while sipping a coffee is a perfect way to start the day.

Lokrum Island Visit
After breakfast, you can head over to the harbor front to catch a ferry to Lokrum. You can purchase your tickets at one of the ticket booths, no need to purchase them in advance. The price is 30,00 EUR per person, round trip.
The ferry runs regularly from the Old Harbour and takes about 15 minutes. There are several departures throughout the day with more frequent runs during the peak summer months.

It’s a perfect half-day trip that offers several different activities including swimming off the rocks, walking the nature trails, or admiring the peacocks that wander the grounds.
There’s a small saltwater lake called the Dead Sea that’s great for a float or you can stroll through the botanical gardens. Fort Royal is a great spot that offers views back toward Dubrovnik which are beautiful.
Pro Tip: There is a small nude beach located on Lokrum. If you find yourself in or around this area you should refrain from taking any pictures.
Lunch
Head back to Old Town for lunch and try somewhere you walked past on Day 1 but didn’t stop at or you can try one of our recommendations.
Lunch Spot Recommendations:
🍴Proto Fish Restaurant – A well-known seafood spot in Old Town offering fresh fish, oysters, and lighter Mediterranean dishes. It’s a good option if you want something a bit more refined without committing to a long, heavy meal.
🍴Wine Bar Škar – Perfect for a lighter, more relaxed lunch with a glass of wine and small plates like cheese, charcuterie, and simple bites. Great if you’re not in the mood for a full sit-down meal.
Afternoon
Fort Lovrijenac
After lunch, we recommend heading over to Fort Lovrijenac to explore one of the last must-see spots around Old Town.
Fort Lovrijenac is one of Dubrovnik’s most dramatic landmarks, sitting on a rocky cliff just outside the western edge of Old Town.
It’s often called “Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar” because of its impressive position and the way it rises above the sea and city walls.
The main highlight is the upper platform, where you get sweeping views back toward Old Town, the city walls, and the Adriatic. It’s one of the best photo spots in Dubrovnik.
There isn’t a lot of “exhibit-style” sightseeing here, but that’s part of the appeal. You’re really coming for the views and the sense of scale. I
t’s also known as a filming location for Game of Thrones, which adds to its popularity, but even without that, it’s worth visiting just for the perspective it gives you on the city.
Dubrovnik City Walls Walk
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for…
No trip to Old Town would be complete without walking the city walls, especially if you’re a Game of Thrones fan.
Old Town, including the walls, are a UNESCO World Heritage site and appeared in many scenes throughout the series. While some of it may have been enhanced through CGI, it’s still fun to see what they look like in real-life.
Be sure to allow at for at least 90 minutes to fully explore the walls. You’ll definitely want to take your time.
The entrance fee for the walls is approximately 40,00 EUR per person.
This fee goes towards preserving the city walls and the Old Town. When you purchase your ticket, it’s valid for the day, meaning you don’t purchase it for a specific time. However, you do need to use it the same day you purchase it.

Evening
Dinner
Tonight, we’ve saved one of our favorite restaurants for your final night.
You’ll see a lot of people mention Restaurant 360 but Above 5 is one of our absolute favorites in all Dubrovnik.
It sits on the rooftop of Boutique Hotel Stari Grad and offers spectacular views over the rooftops of Old Town. Dishes range from fresh fish to tender cuts of meats. Everything we had was amazing and the service was outstanding.
Quick Note: Getting to Above 5 requires climbing several sets of narrow stairs.
D’Vino Wine Bar
After dinner, D’vino wine bar is a good spot to grab a drink. D’vino is one of our favorite evening stops in all of Dubrovnik Old Town.
Tucked up one of the staircase alleys off the Stradun, it’s intimate, casual, and they pour some excellent Croatian wines. It’s perfect for couples that enjoy a good glass of wine.
Try Some Gelato
Since this is your last night in Dubrovnik, we also suggest trying some gelato from one of the many gelaterias you’ll come across as you wander through the Old Town streets. You’ll find one around almost every corner, usually with a line out the door.

We definitely ate or fair share of gelato in Dubrovnik so if you’re looking for some recommendations, here are a couple of our favorite ones.
aRoma
There are several locations of aRoma throughout Croatia, mainly in tourist hotspots. We tried the locations in Hvar Town as well as Old Town Dubrovnik. You’ll find unique offerings such as dark chocolate with orange or some of the more classic flavors like vanilla or stracciatella.
Gelateria Dubrovnik
Located along Stradun, the main street through Old Town, Gelateria Dubrovnik is another great choice for your gelato fix.
This gelateria has the benefit of being located on the main street close to Pile Gate. Because of this, it’s usually very busy but completely worth the wait. One thing to note is that they only accept cash so be sure to visit an ATM prior to visiting if needed.
Evening Stroll Through Old Town
Afterwards, we recommend taking a romantic stroll through Old Town Dubrovnik at night. It’s probably one of the best times of the day to be in Old Town. The day-trippers have left by this time and everything slows down to a more manageable level.
You’ll also notice more street performers and musicians around this time, since the cooler temperatures make it easier to be out and about.

You’ll typically see street performers in Old Town during the peak summer months from June through August however, we visited in early September and they were still performing.
Street performances can include anything from music to acrobats and more. We only saw musicians when we were there and they were absolutely incredible.
This is definitely worth a few minutes of your time and it’s the perfect way to close out your time in Dubrovnik together.
Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik for a 3-Day Stay
The best time to visit Dubrovnik is during late spring and early fall. The weather is warm, the sea is nice for swimming, and the city is much less crowded than in midsummer.
May, June, September, and early October have a good mix of sunshine and less visitors. This makes it easier to enjoy the Old Town and nearby islands.
July and August have the hottest temperatures and the biggest crowds, along with higher prices. Winter is quieter and cheaper but many tours, ferries, and restaurants operate on limited schedules or shut down completely.

Where to Stay in Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik offers a wide range of places to stay, with each area suiting a different travel style. There are pros and cons for all of them. What it really comes down to is what you’re looking for in a hotel.
Staying inside or just outside the Old Town walls puts you within walking distance of major sights. However, they can be pricey and this area gets very busy, especially at the height of tourist season.
These hotels are typically boutique style properties and don’t have amenities like swimming pools.
Lapad and Babin Kuk are popular for beach access, resorts, and a more relaxed atmosphere. However, these areas are still well within reach of the popular sights.
The properties usually have all the amenities you would expect to find in resorts such as spas and swimming pools.
Ploče is an upscale neighborhood within walking distance of Old Town. You can find a few exclusive properties that offer luxury amenities like spas and swimming pools here. One thing to keep in mind for this area is that walking can be challenging due to the many hills.
Our Favorite Romantic Hotels in Dubrovnik:
Luxury Splurge in Ploče: Villa Dubrovnik: If you want to stay in what’s considered to be the best hotel in Dubrovnik, Villa Dubrovnik is for you.
We’ve already introduced you to the amazing onsite restaurant and bar, but this hotel also offers beautiful rooms and suites, most of which have stunning sea views. With its location close to Old Town, this one is hard to beat.
Boutique Stay in Old Town: Boutique Hotel Stari Grad: If you want to be in the middle of all the action, Old Town is the place to be.
You’ll often see guides that suggest staying outside the city walls. This is mainly due to the crowds and the difficulty of navigating the streets with luggage.
Boutique Hotel Stari Grad is the exception. This boutique hotel is located just inside Pile Gate and only a few steps off Stradun. This means you don’t need to venture too far into Old Town to get there.
The rooms are beautifully decorated and its location means that it’s easy for you to pop in for a little while to escape the mid-day heat.
Quiet Retreat In Lapad: Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik: This is a stylish cliffside hotel located just outside Old Town, overlooking a small, quiet bay.
It’s close enough to reach the city in about a 10–15 minute walk, but far enough away to feel noticeably calmer and less crowded.
The hotel is built into the rock, so most of the rooms and common areas face directly out to the Adriatic. There’s also a small beach below the hotel, which adds to the more secluded, tucked-away feel.
It’s a great option if you want something a bit more elevated and romantic while still being within easy reach of Old Town.
