Slovenia

Slovenia is a hidden gem of central Europe, known for its storybook lakes, alpine peaks, and fairytale towns. It’s a place where natural beauty meets understated charm, offering a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Language:

The official language of Slovenia is Slovene, also known as Slovenian but English is widely spoken.

Currency:

The official currency of Slovenia is the
euro.

Weather:

Weather in Slovenia varies depending on the location. Along the coast, you’ll experience hot, dry summers and milder winters with more rain. In the mountains, pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters are common.

Electricity:

The standard voltage is 230 volts (V) at a frequency of 50 hertz (Hz). For items that are single voltage, you might need a converter if it doesn’t match the voltage in Slovenia. If you have a duel voltage device, you might not need it. Slovenia uses type C and type F plugs and sockets. We recommend purchasing a universal adapter.

ATMs/Credit Cards:

You’ll find ATMs available in all the major tourist areas. Credit cards are widely accepted by restaurants and shops. There are some businesses that don’t accept credit cards so be sure to have some euro on-hand.

Tipping:

Though not mandatory, many people do tip in Slovenia to show their appreciation for excellent service.

Our Experience In Slovenia

Slovenia is one of our favorite discoveries. Not that we were the first ever to visit, but it’s not often that you visit a place that hasn’t already been discovered by the masses.

From beautiful Old Town Ljubljana to the glacial blue waters of Lake Bled, everything we saw made us want to come back again.

We enjoyed strolling through the cobblestone streets of Old Town Ljubljana on a late summer’s night that was unusually warm. For breakfast, we dined al fresco while overlooking the glass-like surface of beautiful Lake Bled.

Looking back on it, Slovenia really was a quintessential European experience wrapped up in a compact-sized country. That’s one of the things we loved most about it.

We’ll definitely be visiting Slovenia again soon. I’m already planning the itinerary in my head. See, this is why our bucket list never gets any smaller.

Why You Should Visit

Slovenia As A Vacation Destination

Located in central Europe, Slovenia is surrounded by several other popular vacation destinations including Italy, Hungary, Croatia and Austria.

Its proximity to these other countries makes it a great pre or post itinerary add-on option but

No matter what your interests are, Slovenia has so much to offer. If you’re an avid hiker, spend some time exploring the trails of the Julian Alps.

For wine lovers, indulge in the country’s wine regions of Primorska, Posavje and Podravje.

We definitely can’t forget the stunning Lake Bled which should be included on every Slovenia itinerary.

Whatever you’re looking for, Slovenia offer it and it’s a place that keeps you wanting more. No matter how much you see, you’ll want to go back.

  • Transportation Tip – Slovenia offers ferry service from Piran to surrounding countries during the peak summer season including Rovinj, Croatia and Venice, Italy. This is perfect if you want to include multiple countries on your itinerary.

Best Time To Visit

Slovenia is a perfect summer destination due to its beautiful lakes, stunning mountains and seaside towns. It also has ferry services that connect it to other countries such as Croatia and Italy.

If possible, we recommend visiting Slovenia in June or September especially if you plan to visit other countries. Prices will be a bit lower than July and August and crowds will be a little more manageable.

Something to keep in mind, ferry services will be fully operational from June through September. If you travel in the off-season, ferries may run on a reduced schedule or not at all so it’s best to check before finalizing your itinerary.

October is also a nice time to visit. It’s perfect for hiking, fall foliage and wine harvest festivals.

  • Transportation Tip – Slovenia is one of the 29 Schengen countries which abolished border controls to allow freedom of movement between countries. However, in recent months, some countries have reintroduced some border control measures. It’s best to check the current status when planning your trip if you’ll be traveling between multiple countries.
