Language:

The official language of Croatia is Croatian but English is widely spoken.

Currency:

As of January 1, 2023, the official currency is the euro which replaced the kuna.

Weather:

Weather in Croatia can vary considerably depending on the location. Along the coast, you’ll experience hot, dry summers and milder winters with more rain. Further inland, hot summers and snowy winters are more common.

Electricity:

The standard voltage is 230 volts (V) at a frequency of 50 hertz (Hz). For items that are single voltage, you might need a converter if it doesn’t match the voltage in Croatia. If you have a duel voltage device, you might not need it. Croatia uses type C and type F plugs and sockets. We recommend purchasing a universal adapter.

ATMs/Credit Cards:

You’ll find ATMs available in all the major tourist areas. Credit cards are widely accepted by restaurants and shops. There are some businesses that don’t accept credit cards so be sure to have some euro on-hand.

Tipping:

Though not mandatory, many people do tip in Croatia to show their appreciation for excellent service.

Our Experience In Croatia

From the moment we arrived, Croatia far surpassed our expectations.

From the rolling hills of Istria to the medieval walls of Dubrovnik, Croatia blends old-world charm with breathtaking natural beauty and we couldn’t get enough of it.

We loved exploring inland areas by day and indulging in local cuisine at quaint seaside restaurants at night.

With its rugged coastline, ancient cities, and dramatic national parks, Croatia is made for exploration and the vast number of transportation options makes this easy to do whether by car, ferry or bus.

It’s also easy to visit neighboring countries from Croatia so if you’re able to arrange your flights to fly into one city and out of another, we highly suggest it. When we visited, we flew into Ljubljana, Slovenia and out of Dubrovnik which allowed us to explore all of the areas in between.

Croatia is definitely on our list of places to visit again. It’s one of those places that no matter how much you see and experience, there’s always more to discover.

Why You Should Visit

Croatia As A Vacation Destination

Located along the eastern shores of the Adriatic, Croatia is known for its many beautiful islands.

Blessed with stunning turquoise waters, it has become a popular destination for mega yachts and those seeking an island-hopping experience during the warm summer months.

Travel beyond the islands, however, and you’ll find spectacular mountains, beautiful national parks and numerous quaint towns to explore.

If that isn’t enough, you can spend time touring some of the amazing wineries that you’ll find scattered around the countryside.

Top it all off by indulging in the freshest offerings at the many fabulous seaside restaurants. You may never want to leave.

  • Transportation Tip – If you’re visiting between May and October, take advantage of the ferry service that operates between many of the islands and coastal cities. Not only is it affordable and reliable but it’s definitely a more relaxing, scenic way to travel.

Know Before You Go

Best Time To Visit

It’s no surprise that Croatia is a popular summer destination given its location along the Adriatic. The warmer temperatures bring an increase of yachts, cruise ships and, unfortunately, prices.

If possible, consider visiting Croatia between May and June or September and October. You’ll find lower prices and crowds but you’ll still have the benefit of beautiful weather.

You can certainly travel to Croatia any time of year. However, if you decide to visit during the off-season, there are a couple of things to consider.

Many hotels and restaurants in the popular tourist areas close during the off-season so your options will be limited. In addition, many ferries don’t operate during this time.

If you’re planning day trips from one location such as Dubrovnik, be sure to check the ferry schedules prior to planning your itinerary.

  • Transportation Tip – If you choose to rent a car in Croatia, check with your hotel regarding parking options. Some hotels are located in pedestrian-only areas.
